Hurricane Danielle - Awesome Photo

A textbook photo of a hurricane, Danielle is churning out in the Atlantic and will not strike the US mainland.  With sustained winds of 135 mph it is a Category 4 Hurricane.  Glad it's not expected to make landfall.

Glenn Beck Rally for Glenn Beck!

Aside from rewriting history to that portion of the American public that either was home schooled or never learned anything, Glenn Beck is a publicity whore.  So much so, that he is holding a rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on the anniversary of Dr. King's Speech and the first March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom that really marked a high point of the struggle for civil rights for African Americans.

What is his rally about?  Glenn Beck!  Of course he also spouts some crap about "taking the civil rights movement back".  Say what?  An over-privileged white guy and he wants to take the civil rights movement back? We really do live in Bizarro World!

The rally is all about Glenn Beck.  Whoever shows up is there to worship at Beck's feet and get all riled up with the hate Beck spews.  Where Dr. King preached about a dream, Beck is bringing a nightmare.  He is nothing but a media whore.

The Bagel Tax

OK, so the state legislature of New York has gone batty. They passed a 9 cent tax on sliced bagels. Unsliced, no tax, sliced....TAX. What the f?

Seriously.  They figure if it's just a bagel, it's a "grocery item", no tax, but slice it and it's "prepared food", BINGO, kaching!  Oy vey!

Egyptian Coke Ad - Can Anyone Translate?

Over on Joe My God he posted this Egyptian Coke ad and it's amazingly homoerotic for Egypt, a country where being gay is illegal.  I would love to know what the announcer says in the last few seconds.

Ken Mehlman - Former RNC Chair Comes Out!

Here's a big surprise, Ken Mehlman, former RNC Chairman is gay. Big story in the Atlantic! Yawn.

Everyone knew he was in the closet but himself.  Prior to the 2004 Bush reelection, Mike Rogers of BlogActive outed him and now finally, long after the damage done by the Republicans in the most homophobic campaign in years he decides to come clean.  Excuse the fu*k out of me, but if this asshat now decides he will be welcomed with open arms by the LGBT community he is mistaken.

He is a collaborator in my book and that makes him every bit as despicable as the rest of the folks who used LGBT rights as a wedge issue to divide the country and deny us equal rights.  Now he wants to work for marriage equality?  Go fu*k yourself Mr. Mehlman.  Maybe the Log Cabin Republicans can use you as their poster boy now.

New AIDS Treatment Using Old Drugs

It has been so long since I have heard really good news on the HIV/AIDS from that I rarely follow goings on in that arena, but today comes word of a study that is worth looking at.  Using a couple of drugs already FDA approved and in use for treating cancer, decitabine and gemcitabin, researchers have been able to cause the virus to mutate itself out of existence.  They call this "lethal mutagenesis" and it is working consistently in mice.

Mutations is the big problem with HIV and it has always been the problem with drug therapy, but since this treatment uses that mutation to work against the virus itself it's pretty startling.

I won't hold my breath, but I will keep following this one to see how well it rolls out into human trials.

Politicians, Clergy, News Media - STOP THE HATE!

This is getting way out of hand.  The phony controversy over the Islamic Cultural Center in NYC has reached a dangerous tipping point.  All the hate rhetoric and hyperbole being spewed by politicians, clergy and the new media is causing real life threatening problems.  Today a cab driver was stabbed in NYC after the passenger asked him "are you a Muslim?"

Enough is enough!  Find another issue to inflame your Kool Ade drinking minions! I don't think these people understand they are playing with fire.

Just because it's easy to get people riled up does not mean it should be done and worse used for political and monetary gain.  We are risking the wonderful civil society we have had in this country since the Civil War, let's not waste that on a cheap way to get votes or cash!  Fox News, tone it down!  Wacko fundamentalist clergy, try preaching from the New Testement and be sure it is in-context.  Politicians, start leading and stop pandering!

Yea, like this will have any effect?  It's all I can do.

MORE HATE UPDATE:

Now comes word that a California Mosque is victim of vandalism by people protesting the alleged "Ground Zero Mosque".  Like I said, this is way out of control!

America The Stupid - Part Drei

Huffington Post, though unabashedly biased is filled with nifty goodies. The latest is a quick slide show of results in recent polls. It clearly shows that our country is at least 20% either brain dead or dumb as a post.  We have a public education system in the country and there is no excuse for these mind blowing statistics.
  • 20% of Americans cannot locate the country on a map of the world.
  • 20% of Americans do not know who we declared independence from in 1776.
  • 20% of Americans believe witches are real.
  • 20% of Americans believe the sun revolves around the earth.
  • 20% of Americans believe playing the lottery is a sound financial decision.
  • 20% of Americans believe in alien abductions.

WE ARE DOOMED!

Fox News Investor Funding "Terror" Mosque?

So if you ever wanted proof that Fox News isa bunch of either clueless jerks or just plain evil, the Daily Show just set everyone straight.

Al Walid bin Talal, a major shareholder in News Corp, the Fox parent company, is a major contributor to the Kingdom Foundation which is backing the Islamic cultural center in New York.  That same cultural center Fox is calling a "Terror Mosque".  So Fox News is in effect funding the mosque and also igniting the whole controversy about it.

But of course no announcer or news reader or whatever they call their on air talking heads has told anyone this fact. They are either covering it up or they are stupid and I doubt that.

So here is the thing, Fox improves it's ratings and the GOP brand by drumming up a fake controversy that they are in part funding.  I gotta come down on the side of evil...that is just plain cynical and evil.

The problem is that the Fox audience is too stupid to even get the connection if you told them...and so the whole thing is both evil and stupid.  Go figure?

Anti-Mosque Rally Shows Really Ugly Americans

If I hadn't seen the footage for myself I wouldn't have believed it.  In New York City, perhaps the most diverse city in the country a rally of people protesting the building of the Cordoba Center on the site of an old Burlington Coat Factory store.  The center will include a prayer room and an Islamic cultural center.  It is being called a mosque by opponents and for some reason is supposed to be a travesty to the memory of 9/11 victims.

Aside from the fact that it's just a commercial street two city blocks from Ground Zero, the real reason for the protest is political.  It had been drummed up by the right wing as a way to get momentum in what is an increasingly split party.  The GOP through it's surrogates such as Fox News (a huge contributor to the Republican Party) have made the construction an issue.

Now all that whipped up emotion is bubbling to the surface in very ugly ways.  The "demonstration" was about as blatant display of bigotry and intolerance as I have seen since the 1960's.  The crowd almost attacks a black man who walks through because they think he is Muslim.  His crime?  Wearing a strange looking hat.

Watch this and then tell me why this kind of crap is justified.

If this is the America that the GOP and the "Tea Baggers" envision, I want no part of it.

Who is that Old Guy in the Mirror?

Sometimes I have to look at myself in the mirror and admit that I am not only heavier than I was 30 years ago, but 30 years older.  That is a tough thing for me to get.  Oh, I don't have a problem with the number of years I have lived on this earth, what I do have a problem with is feeling like I am no longer young.  That is the part that sucks.

My health is pretty good, I don't drink or do drugs and only smoke an occasional cigar.  I stay out of the sun and try to make sure I walk for 20-30 minutes a day.  Yet, after a morning of working on a minor construction project in our backyard, I feel worn out.  That's the part that sucks.

Additionally, as if to drive home the point I visited an ophthalmologist to get my eyes examined in advance of getting new glasses.  I had already gotten over the whole trifocals shock a few years ago, but this time she looked in my eyes and after a lot of "humms" she asked me if I knew what cataracts were.  Great!

Not in immediate need of any action, but if they get worse she suggested surgery.  If I ever needed a signpost that I was getting old, it is that!  But enough bellyaching, I have a whole lot of work to do.  My new book is in progress, though not nearly finished, and my work with NLA-International, the advisory board of Woodhull Freedom Foundation as well as the local Stonewall Democrats should keep me occupied.

That and holding down a full time job, a really great relationship with my partner and taking care of our house and 2 cats should be enough to prevent further descents into "feeling my age".  Besides, when I tell folks my age, they always lie and say they would never have guessed.  I am grateful for either their poor eyesight, or their kind lies.
